3 out of 5 stars Two Unusual Pediatric Causes of Dilutional Hyponatremia. Boetzkes S et al.  Pediatr Emerg Med July 2010;26:503-505. Abstract Hyponatremia, especially if it is acute and develops rapidly, can be associated with significant and sometimes severe consequences: nausea, vomiting, headache, decreased mental status, seizures and coma.  Fatal cases have been reported. This paper, from Belgium, presents two cases of clinically severe pediatric hyponatremia in which the ultimate cause was not immediately obvious: 1)  A 10-year-old girl was treated for bed-wetting with desmopressin — a synthetic replacement for antidiuretic hormone.  After 2 year of treatment enuresis returned and the anticholinergic drug oxybutynin was added. Five days later the child developed headache and...MedWorm Message: Register for MedMatcha, MedWorm's medical advertising network, and receive $5 free advertising.

Sujit S. Datta Molten metallic nanoparticles have recently been used to construct graphene nanostructures with crystallographic edges. The mechanism by which this happens, however, remains unclear. Here, we present a simple model that explains how a droplet can etch graphene. Two factors possibly contribute to thi ... [J. Appl. Phys. 108, 024307 (2010)] published Tue Jul 27, 2010. Summary: Despite being relatively common and potentially able to have clinical and pathophysiological consequences, the comorbidity between epilepsy and sleep disorders is poorly investigated in the literature and rarely taken into consideration by clinicians in general practice. There is increasing evidence that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) coexists in epilepsy (in 10% of unselected adult epilepsy patients, 20% of children with epilepsy and up to 30% of drug-resistant epilepsy patients). A few lines of evidence suggest that continuous positive airway pressure treatment of OSA in epilepsy patients improves seizure control, cognitive performance and quality of life.Parasomnias and epileptic seizures can coexist in the same subject making the differential diagnosis of these conditions parti...

A novel method for the measurement of wetting efficiency in a trickle-bed reactor under reaction conditions is introduced. The method exploits reaction rate differences of two first-order liquid-limited reactions occurring in parallel, to infer wetting efficiencies without any other knowledge of the reaction kinetics or external mass transfer characteristics. Using the hydrogenation of linear- and isooctenes, wetting efficiency is measured in a 50-mm internal diameter, high-pressure trickle-bed reactor. Liquid-solid mass transfer coefficients are also estimated from the experimental conversion data. Measurements were performed for upflow operation and two literature-defined boundaries of hydrodynamic multiplicity in trickle flow. Hydrodynamic multiplicity in trickle flow gave rise to as mu...

Authors: Pai JH, Xu W, Sims CE, Allbritton NL Cell microarrays with culture sites composed of individually removable microstructures or micropallets have proven benefits for isolation of cells from a mixed population. The laser energy required to selectively remove these micropallets with attached cells from the array depends on the microstructure surface area in contact with the substrate. Laser energies sufficient to release micropallets greater than 100 mum resulted in loss of cell viability. A new three-dimensional culture site similar in appearance to a table was designed and fabricated using a simple process that relied on a differential sensitivity of two photoresists to UV-mediated photopolymerization. With this design, the larger culture area rests on four small supports to mi...MedWorm Message: Register for MedMatcha, MedWorm's medical advertising network, and receive $5 free advertising.

Methods : After the determination of 15 primary schools in the provincial center of Ankara, questionnaires were given to 15,150 students to be answered by their parents. Detailed urologic history was obtained and physical examination applied to the students whose parents answered the questionnaire. After excluding children with polysymptomatic NE, 14060 questionnaires of MNE patients were evaluated. Demographic features with social and medical history of students and their parents, general approach of family to the childr...

In conclusion, evidence-based recommendations for the management of bleeding in patients with ACS are currently lacking, so that prevention through accurate assessment of the individual risk is the most valid strategy. Giudice, E., Giannetto, C., Gianesella, M. Effect of desmopressin (DDAVP) on immune-mediated haemorrhagic disorders due to canine monocytic ehrlichiosis: a preliminary study. J. vet. Pharmacol. Therap. doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2885.2010.01196.x. To evaluate the possible use of desmopressin acetate (DDAVP) in haemorrhagic disorders consequent to canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), three dogs infected by Ehrlichia canis, with a history of thrombocytopenia and recent bleeding, were studied. The dogs were administered desmopressin (1 [mu]g/kg b.w. s.c.) every 24 h on three occasions. Blood samples were collected immediately before, and after 2 and 48 h the first DDAVP administration, to assess haematological, clinical chemistry and clotting time parameters. Spontaneous bleeding stopped within 1 h ...MedWorm Message: Register for MedMatcha, MedWorm's medical advertising network, and receive $5 free advertising.

Authors: Witek P, Zgliczyński W, Zieliński G, Jeske W Cushing's disease is related to a significant increase in mortality due to chronic hypercortisolaemia complications. It is known that 50% of non-treated subjects die within 5 years. Transsphenoidal selective adenomectomy is the treatment of choice. The incidence of relapses, even following a successful surgical procedure, is high and reaches 20-25% during the 5-year follow-up period. The authors discuss the case of a patient, currently aged 60, after repeat pituitary surgery, with progressive cardiovascular complications, in whom persistent Cushing's disease was diagnosed. The diagnosis was determined despite normal plasma ACTH, serum cortisol levels, and 17-OHCS concentrations in daily urine. There was also a lack of obvious ...

In this study, the effects of four types of fragrant ingredients (d-limonene, piperitone, alpha-pinene, and cinnamaldehyde) were examined in a mouse model of fluid retention. The mice were loaded with water after treatment with desmopressin (an antidiuretic hormone). In addition, zingerone, a pungent component of ginger which is considered to be effective in the treatment of edema, was examined. Moreover, their effects were compared with those of furosemide, a representative diuretic. Among the five types of fragrant ingredients examined, all except for cinnamaldehyde increased the urine volume in the fluid retention mouse model when administered at a dose of 100 mg/kg. In particular, d-limonene and zingerone significantly increased the urine volume. Thus the effects of these two ingredien...
