Conclusions In primary Sjögren syndrome, evidence from controlled trials suggests benefits for pilocarpine and cevimeline for sicca features and topical cyclosporine for moderate or severe dry eye. Anti–tumor necrosis factor agents have not shown clinical efficacy, and larger controlled trials are needed to establish the efficacy of rituximab. This article provides a short update on fatigue in Parkinson's disease (PD), focusing on measurements, prevalence, associated factors, pathophysiology and treatment. As long as there is no universally accepted definition of fatigue the definition used has to be stated. Different aspects of fatigue, namely physical-, mental- and chronic fatigue will be discussed. The many questionnaires used to assess fatigue measure different aspects of fatigue, making comparisons between studies difficult. Examples of uni- and multidimensional self-report questionnaires are given. In PD patients, the wide range of prevalence of fatigue (37-56%) is largely because of varying definitions of fatigue and populations tested. Without understanding the pathophysiology of subjective fatigue, the development of ef...

Next, very early research into a virus that may contain clues to prostate cancer -- and chronic fatigue syndrome.
The virus is called X-M-R-V, which stands for xenotropic murine leukemia-related virus.
The term "murine" indicates that the virus used to be found only in mice. But recently, it's apparently made its way into humans as well.

I tutor a number of students from my local high school, which offers a remarkable English course called Psychology and Literature. What an idea! Although Iâd never heard of such a course at any other school, Psych and Lit is extremely popular here, and Iâve been very impressed with the concept and the content.
My favorite assignment has students researching one of a selection of mental illnesses, and then writing a fiction piece from the perspective of a person with that illness. I worked with one of my students (Iâll call him Joe) on this amazing project.
I loved the idea right away. Getting young people to think deeply about mental illness, and gaining some appreciation for what it must be like, sounded so valuable. But I also wondered what students might make of this experience. C...MedWorm Message: Register for MedMatcha, MedWorm's medical advertising network, and receive $5 free advertising.

ScienceInsider reported this week that in the latest twist in a contentious debate about a possible tie between a retrovirus and chronic fatigue syndrome, the journal Retrovirology last week published a study that failed to find a key virus in blood samples from 51 CFS patients and 56 healthy people, among other stories. A study that supports the controversial link between chronic fatigue syndrome and a new type of virus has been blocked from being published in a leading scientific journal even though it had been accepted for publication by its editors. The study, by virologists working for the US Government's Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is believed to support earlier findings published last October claiming that patients with the syndrome, also known as ME, are likely to be infected with a virus called XMRV, which some scientists believe may trigger the condition.
