UroToday.com - For many decades, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) has been considered the benchmark of surgical management for BPH. The ideal irrigant for TURP would be a nonconductive medium that does not interfere with diathermy, has a high degree of translucency, has osmolality similar to that of serum, and causes only minimal side effects when absorbed. Traditionally, a 1.5% glycine solution is used for irrigation during TURP. The absorption of irrigating fluid is a consistent cause of complications... UroToday.com - Our chapter on BPH in the recent Urologic Clinics of North America focuses on improved methods for defining the etiology of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The use of patient reported outcome tools (questionnaires) as adjuncts in evaluation of LUTS is highlighted and the purpose, function, and characteristics of each of the more common LUTS questionnaires are discussed in detail. The source and severity of patient symptoms, as well as response to treatment, can be elucidated from questionnaires or combinations thereof beyond what can be obtained from patient histories... Study Type [ndash] Therapy (case series)Level of Evidence 4 To present our experience with single-port transvesical enucleation of the prostate (STEP) in 34 patients with large-volume benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We performed STEP in 34 patients with large volume (>60 g) BPH (mean age 69 years, body mass index 26 kg/m2, and American Society of Anesthesiology class 2). The mean prostate volume estimated by transrectal ultrasonography was 102.5 mL and the mean baseline prostate-specific antigen level was 6.7 ng/mL. A novel single-port device was inserted percutaneously into the bladder through a 2[ndash]3 cm incision in the suprapubic skin crease. After establishing pneumovesicum, the prostate adenoma was enucleated transvesically using standard laparoscopic instruments, and the adeno...MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

This study demonstrates for the first time that GHRH can act as a growth factor in BPH-1 cells and that GHRH antagonists can reverse its stimulatory effect. New observations are provided on the mechanism of action of GHRH antagonists in BPH. Our findings support the merit of further work on the development of GHRH antagonists for therapy of BPH. A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is widely used as a diagnostic marker for prostate cancer (PC) because of its high specificity. However, elevated serum PSA does not occur only in PC but also in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Since the structural changes of N-glycans during carcinogenesis are common phenomena, we investigated whether PC-specific N-glycans are linked to PSA. We first analyzed the carbohydrate structures of PSA derived from seminal fluid, serum of BPH and PC patients, and PC cell line, namely, LNCaP using eight lectin-immobilized columns and then with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The fraction of serum PSA from PC patients bound to both Fuc1-2Gal and βGalNAc binding Trichosanthes japonica agglutinin-II (TJA-II) column, while that from BPH patients did...
